Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Released May 28, 1998, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. For information on "Peanut Stocks and Processing" call at (202) 720-3843, office hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Stocks estimates refer to April 30, 1998; all other data are for the month of April. Peanut Stocks Down 2 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.41 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.45 billion pounds last year. This total includes 557 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 800 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 52.6 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of April 30,1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 601 million pounds of which 578 million pounds were edible grades and 23.5 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 120 million pounds; Runners, 406 million pounds; and Spanish, 51.5 million pounds. April millings totaled 302 million pounds. Millings by type were 65.0 million pounds of Virginias, 227 million pounds of Runners, and 9.90 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 115 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during April. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 60.4 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 26.7 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 24.5 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 46.1 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 978,218 pounds of peanut butter, and 202,212 pounds of roasted peanuts during April. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand April 30 totaled 36.9 million pounds, compared with 20.4 million pounds on March 31, 1998. Of the April total, 10.3 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 25.6 million pounds were Runners, and 977,000 pounds were Spanish. March stocks of treated seed included 5.61 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 14.7 million pounds of Runners, and 32,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (5-98) Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation. Allowances are made for these missing reports and revised totals are published in the next report. 1/ Excludes stocks on farms.
