Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to May 31, 1998; all other data are for the month of May. Peanut Stocks Down 6 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.16 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.24 billion pounds last year. This total includes 284 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 827 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 51.6 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of May 31, 1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 622 million pounds of which 597 million pounds were edible grades and 24.5 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 117 million pounds; Runners, 431 million pounds; and Spanish, 49.5 million pounds. May millings totaled 276 million pounds. Millings by type were 54.0 million pounds of Virginias, 221 million pounds of Runners, and 670,000 pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 123 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during May. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 67.3 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 29.8 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 22.6 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 42.9 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 5,114,720 pounds of peanut butter, and 167,238 pounds of roasted peanuts during May. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand May 31 totaled 11.9 million pounds, compared with 36.9 million pounds on April 30, 1998. Of the May total, 4.05 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 6.86 million pounds were Runners, and 993,000 pounds were Spanish. April stocks of treated seed included 10.3 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 25.6 million pounds of Runners, and 977,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (6-98) Table 1. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation.
