Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to June 30, 1998; all other data are for the month of June. Peanut Stocks Down 5 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 971 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.02 billion pounds last year. This total includes 89.7 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 838 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 43.6 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of June 30, 1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 630 million pounds of which 604 million pounds were edible grades and 25.6 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 105 million pounds; Runners, 454 million pounds; and Spanish, 45.7 million pounds. June millings totaled 194 million pounds. Millings by type were 21.8 million pounds of Virginias, 172 million pounds of Runners, and no Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 106 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during June. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 40.3 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 34.4 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 28.5 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 32.5 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2,880,976 pounds of peanut butter, and 130,896 pounds of roasted peanuts during June. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand June 30 totaled 635,000 pounds, compared with 11.9 million pounds on May 31, 1998. Of the June total, 74,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 514,000 pounds were Runners, and 47,000 pounds were Spanish. May stocks of treated seed included 4.05 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 6.86 million pounds of Runners, and 993,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (7-98) Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation.
