Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to July 31, 1998; all other data are for the month of July. Peanut Stocks Down 5 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 754 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 795 million pounds last year. This total includes 27.3 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 696 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 30.6 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of July 31, 1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 524 million pounds of which 509 million pounds were edible grades and 14.1 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 90.4 million pounds; Runners, 380 million pounds; and Spanish, 39.4 million pounds. July millings totaled 50.7 million pounds. Millings by type were 5.12 million pounds of Virginias, 45.6 million pounds of Runners, and no Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 105 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during July. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 48.9 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 28.3 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 25.4 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 30.2 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 3,201,658 pounds of peanut butter, and 215,244 pounds of roasted peanuts during July. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand July 31 totaled 192,000 pounds, compared with 635,000 pounds on June 30, 1998. Of the July total, 88,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 90,000 pounds were Runners, and 14,000 pounds were Spanish. June stocks of treated seed included 74,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 514,000 million pounds of Runners, and 47,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (8-98) Table 1. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation.
