Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to Oct 31, 1998; all other data are for the month of October. Peanut Stocks Up 20 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 2.62 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 2.18 billion pounds last year. This total includes 2.08 billion pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 512 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 22.9 million pounds. There were 96.6 million Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of October 31, 1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 385 million pounds of which 364 million pounds were edible grades and 20.8 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginia 81.3 million pounds; Runners, 258 million pounds; and Spanish, 25.0 million pounds. October millings totaled 438 million pounds. Millings by type were 136 million pounds of Virginia, 284 million pounds of Runners, and 17.7 million pounds Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 148 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during October. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 66.5 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 46.3 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 32.9 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 14.6 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 1,541,514 pounds of peanut butter, and 56,,520 pounds of roasted peanuts during October. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand October 31 totaled 162,000 pounds, compared with 160,000 pounds on September 30, 1998. Of the October total, 59,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencia, 89,000 pounds were Runners, and 14,000 pounds were Spanish. September stocks of treated seed included 62,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencia, 84,000 million pounds of Runners, and 14,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (11-98) Table 1. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation. Allowances are made for these missing reports and revised totals are published in the next report. 1/ Excludes stocks on farms.
