Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Released May 28, 1999, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Stocks estimates refer to April 30, 1999; all other data are for the month of April. Peanut Stocks Up From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 2.42 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, up from last year. This total includes 1.12 billion pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 1.24 billion pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 65.5 million pounds. There were 36.6 million pounds of Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of April 30, 1999. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 930 million pounds of which 912 million pounds were edible grades and 18.0 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 166 million pounds; Runners, 709 million pounds; and Spanish, 36.9 million pounds. April millings totaled 354 million pounds. Millings by type were 68.6 million pounds of Virginias, 285 million pounds of Runners, and 566,000 pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 153 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during April. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 65.4 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 28.3 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 25.6 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 31.7 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 78,144 pounds of peanut butter, and 39,132 pounds of roasted peanuts during April. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand April 30, totaled 27.2 million pounds, compared with 10.7 million pounds on March 31, 1999. Of the April total,8.72 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 17.4 million pounds were Runners, and 1.02 million pounds were Spanish. March stocks of treated seed included 5.33 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 5.13 million pounds of Runners, and 277,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (5-99) Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers, and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation. Allowances are made for these missing reports and revised totals are published in the next report. 1/ Excludes stocks on farms.
