Stocks estimates refer to May 31, 1999; all other data are for the month of May. Peanut Stocks Up From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 2.13 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, up from last year. This total includes 765 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 1.30 billion pounds of farmer stock equivalent. There were 36.4 million pounds of Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of May 31, 1999. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 975 million pounds of which 948 million pounds were edible grades and 26.9 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 160 million pounds; Runners, 754 million pounds; and Spanish, 34.1 million pounds. May millings totaled 329 million pounds. Millings by type were 62.8 million pounds of Virginias, 266 million pounds of Runners, and 870,000 pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 157 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during May. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 62.1 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 29.5 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 28.8 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 34.9 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 29,328 pounds of peanut butter, and 75,078 pounds of roasted peanuts during May. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand May 31, totaled 15.3 million pounds, compared with 27.2 million pounds on April 30, 1999. Of the May total, 5.84 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 8.37 million pounds were Runners, and 1.10 million pounds were Spanish. April stocks of treated seed included 8.72.million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 17.4 million pounds of Runners, and 1.02 million pounds of Spanish. Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers, and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation.
