Peanut Stocks Up 34 Percent from Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage on May 31, 2002 totaled 2.12 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.58 billion pounds last year. This total includes 980 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 1.08 billion pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 68.0 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of May 31, 2002. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 810 million pounds of which 788 million pounds were edible grades and 22.3 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 157 million pounds of Virginias, 592 million pounds of Runners, and 38.9 million pounds of Spanish. May millings totaled 365 million pounds. Millings by type were 61.3 million pounds of Virginias, 289 million pounds of Runners, and 14.5 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 128 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during May. Utilization by type were 70.9 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 23.5 million pounds for peanut candy, and 31.8 million pounds for snack peanuts. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 58.3 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2.17 million pounds of peanut butter and 66,528 pounds of roasted peanuts during May. Stocks of treated seed on hand May 31, 2002 totaled 5.25 million pounds, compared with 28.9 million pounds on April 30, 2002. Of the May total, 1.38 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 3.62 million pounds were Runners, and 247,000 pounds were Spanish. April stocks of treated seed included 7.21 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 20.8 million pounds of Runners, and 857,000 pounds of Spanish. Stocks estimates refer to May 31, 2002.
