Peanut Stocks Down 26 Percent from Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage on May 31, 2003 totaled 1.58 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 2.12 billion pounds last year. This total includes 720 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 796 million pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 66.4 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of May 31, 2003. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 599 million pounds of which 574 million pounds were edible grades and 24.5 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 72.6 million pounds of Virginias, 465 million pounds of Runners, and 36.6 million pounds of Spanish. May millings totaled 331 million pounds. Millings by type were 51.5 million pounds of Virginias, 280 million pounds of Runners, and 140,000 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 125 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during May. Utilization by type was 70.0 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 28.3 million pounds for peanut candy, and 24.0 million pounds for snack peanuts. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 46.9 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2.04 million pounds of peanut butter. Stocks of treated seed on hand May 31, 2003 totaled 17.0 million pounds, compared with 19.3 million pounds on April 30, 2003. Of the May total, 2.66 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 13.8 million pounds were Runners, and 529,000 pounds were Spanish. April stocks of treated seed included 2.73 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 16.4 million pounds of Runners, and 162,000 pounds of Spanish. Stocks estimates refer to May 31, 2003.
