Peanut Stocks Down 50 Percent from Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage on August 31, 2003 totaled 592 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.18 billion pounds last year. This total includes 77.2 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 482 million pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 33.7 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of August 31, 2003. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 362 million pounds of which 351 million pounds were edible grades and 11.5 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 53.2 million pounds of Virginias, 277 million pounds of Runners, and 20.4 million pounds of Spanish. August millings totaled 66.5 million pounds. Millings by type were 3.76 million pounds of Virginias, 61.3 million pounds of Runners, and 1.50 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 140 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during August. Utilization by type was 78.0 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 32.3 million pounds for peanut candy, and 28.1 million pounds for snack peanuts. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 56.6 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2.72 million pounds of peanut butter and 206,064 pounds of roasted peanuts during August. Stocks of treated seed on hand August 31, 2003 totaled 396,000 pounds, compared with 911,000 pounds on July 31, 2003. Of the August total, 134,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencias, and 260,000 pounds were Runners. July stocks of treated seed included 234,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencias, and 667,000 pounds of Runners. Stocks estimates refer to August 31, 2003. All other data are for the month of August.
