Peanut Stocks Down 8 Percent from Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage on December 31, 2003 totaled 2.29 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 2.49 billion pounds last year. This total includes 1.71 billion pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 537 million pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 41.5 million pounds. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 404 million pounds of which 388 million pounds were edible grades and 15.6 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 75.6 million pounds of Virginias, 293 million pounds of Runners, and 19.7 million pounds of Spanish. December millings totaled 370 million pounds. Millings by type were 62.4 million pounds of Virginias, 291 million pounds of Runners, and 16.5 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 124 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during December. Utilization by type was 66.7 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 22.3 million pounds for peanut candy, and 34.2 million pounds for snack peanuts. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 33.5 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 1.68 million pounds of peanut butter and 102,384 pounds of roasted peanuts during December. Stocks of treated seed on hand December 31, 2003 totaled 741,000 pounds, compared with 396,000 pounds on November 30, 2003. Of the December total, 141,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencias, and 598,000 pounds were Runners. November stocks of treated seed included 134,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencias, and 260,000 pounds of Runners. Stocks estimates refer to December 31, 2003.
