September 1996 Pot 6(96) Potatoes This publication presents final 1995 estimates of acreage, yield per acre, production, farm disposition, season average price, value, and utilization of sales including processing with historic comparisons. First of the month (December through May) stocks of potatoes for the 15 major fall producing States are also included. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. In 1995, summer estimates in Michigan and Minnesota were combined with fall potatoes. This report contains estimates as they were originally published in 1994 showing summer and fall estimates separately for these two States. The combined estimates are shown in the State tables on pages 12-14. Sub-State estimates were also dropped from New York's program in 1995. The 1994 estimates are shown in their original format with accompanying totals for the State. These final estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments and unloads, Federal- State inspections and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production, including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State have been classified by seasonal group according to the period when the largest supplies are usually harvested. The four seasonal groups are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July through September Fall September through November Crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because there is some overlapping of harvest before or after the specified season. Generally, the marketing season closely follows the harvesting season except for the fall crop where marketing from storage may extend through July of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is generally the start of harvest through July of the following year. Potato Production Off 5 Percent But Value Record High Total 1995 potato production is estimated at 444 million cwt, down 5 percent from the record high in 1994 but 3 percent above 1993, Harvested area, at 1.37 million acres, was down less than 1 percent from year earlier but 4 percent above 1993. The average yield of 323 cwt per acre dropped 16 cwt from 1994 and was 3 cwt below 1993. Winter production in 1995 gained 4 percent from a year earlier, spring dropped 11 percent, as summer and fall combined for a decline of 5 percent. Heavy rains washed out or delayed winter and spring potatoes in California and Florida. Planting and harvest were late in most summer and fall States. Growing conditions then dried up to normal and turned hot in Texas and in the Northeast. In Maine, hot, dry weather during much of the growing season hurt yields but kept a mild blight situation in check. Some Atlantic Coast States and Minnesota enjoyed record high yields. Open fall weather allowed potatoes to put on extra weight in the Northwest but blight damage reduced production. The late start and early frost reduced Colorado's potato crop. Value of production was estimated at a record high $3.00 billion from the 1995 crop, up 15 percent from a year earlier and 13 percent above 1993. The average price was $6.77 per cwt compared with $5.58 a year earlier and $6.17 from the 1993 potato crop. Sales from the 1995 potato crop totaled 408 million cwt, down 4 percent from 1994 but 4 percent above 1993. Non-sales accounted for 35.3 million cwt of 1995 potatoes, 18 percent less than the previous year and 2 percent less than 1993. Typically, 91 percent of potatoes produced are sold (based on the past 5-year average). The other 9 percent are either lost (shrinkage and loss) or used for seed, home use and livestock feed on farms where grown. In the 1995 season, farmers sold 92.0 percent of their crop and kept or lost 8.0 percent. Shrinkage and loss was estimated at 29.5 million cwt, The lowest since 1990 and 21 percent below 1994. Livestock feed and home use totaled 958,000 cwt, down 16 percent. Growers kept 4.79 million cwt for seed on their own farms, a gain of 1 percent from the previous year. Processors used 256 million cwt of potatoes from the 1995 crop, down 2 percent from 1994 but 6 percent above the 1993 crop usage. Table stock totaled 124 million cwt, off 7 percent from last year. Other sales (seed and livestock feed) of 28.8 million cwt were up slightly. Chip potato use totaled 47.9 million cwt, down 3 percent from a year earlier. Freezing potatoes totaled 156 million cwt, down 4 percent while dehydrating claimed a record high 44.5 million cwt, up 7 percent. Canning use totaled 5.9 million cwt, up 7 percent. Starch, flour and other products were made from 1.7 million cwt of potatoes, down 23 percent.
