United States Department of Agriculture Potatoes 1997 Summary September 1998 National Agricultural Statistics Service Pot 6(98)a Potatoes This publication presents final 1997 potato estimates of acreage, yield per acre, production, farm disposition, season average price, value, and utilization of sales including processing with historic comparisons. First of the month (December through May) stocks of potatoes for the 15 major fall producing States are also included. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. These final estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments and unloads, Federal- State inspections, and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production, including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State has been classified by seasonal group according to the period (quarter) when the largest supplies are harvested. The four seasonal groups are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July through September Fall September through November Crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because there is some overlapping of harvest before or after the specified season. Generally, the marketing season closely follows the harvesting season except for the fall crop when marketing from storage may extend through August of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is generally from the start of harvest through August of the following year. Third Largest Potato Production; Value Up 7 Percent Total 1997 potato production is estimated at 466 million cwt, down 7 percent from 1996 but 5 percent above 1995. Harvested area, at 1.35 million acres, was down 6 percent from 1996 and 2 percent below 1995. The average yield of 346 cwt per acre was down 4 cwt from 1996 but 23 cwt above 1995. In 1997, all seasonal groups had production below the previous year: Winter fell 5 percent; spring decreased 3 percent; summer dropped 8 percent; and fall potatoes declined 7 percent. This is the third largest total potato production in the United States. Summer potato production was revised to 17.9 million cwt for 1997, down 8 percent from 1996 and less than 1 percent below 1995. Harvested area of 65,900 acres fell 12 percent from 1996, while the average yield of 271 cwt per acre gained 10 cwt from a year earlier. The revised production estimate places the summer potato crop 9 percent above the July 1997 forecast. Fall potatoes were finalized at 423 million cwt, down 7 percent from 1996 but 5 percent above 1995. This is the second largest production of fall potatoes in the United States, exceeded only by the record large crop of 1996. Area har- vested in 1997 was estimated at 1.18 million acres, down 6 percent from 1996 and 3 percent below two years ago. The average yield, at 359 cwt per acre, was down 5 cwt from 1996. Final production of fall potatoes was 1 percent above the first forecast made in November 1997. Value of all potato production was estimated at $2.60 billion, up 7 percent from last year but 13 percent below the record high value in 1995. The average price, at $5.62 per cwt gained 70 cents from a year earlier but was $1.15 short of 1995. Sales from the 1997 potato crop totaled 428 million cwt, down 5 percent from 1996 but 5 percent above 1995. Non sales accounted for 37.4 million cwt of 1997 potatoes, down 21 percent from 1996 but 7 percent above 1995. Over the past five years, an average of 90.7 percent of the potatoes produced have been sold. The other 9.3 percent was either lost (shrinkage and loss) or used for seed, home use, and livestock feed on farms where grown. In the 1997 season, farmers sold 91.9 percent of their crop and kept or lost 8.1 percent. Processors used 268 million cwt of raw potatoes from the 1997 crop, down 5 per- cent from 1996 but 5 percent above 1995. Table stock sales totaled 131 million cwt, less than 1 percent below last year. Seed sales of 25.4 million cwt were up 5 percent. Sales for livestock feed, at 3.60 million cwt, backed off sharply from the 1996 diversion program but were 12 percent above 1995. Chip potato use totaled 48.1 million cwt, slightly below a year earlier. Freezers took 165 million cwt of raw potatoes, down 5 percent, while dehydrating claimed 48.4 million cwt, down 11 percent. Canning use, at 5.50 million cwt, gained 10 percent. Starch, flour and other products were made from 1.31 million cwt of potatoes, a drop of 33 percent from last year. Shrinkage and loss was estimated at 32.2 million cwt, down 22 percent from last year but 9 percent above 1995. Livestock feed and home use totaled 1.33 million cwt, down 7 percent. Growers kept an additional 4.14 million cwt for seed on their own farms, down 14 percent from last year.
