Also included are first of the month potato stocks (December through June) for the 13 major fall potato producing States. Monthly prices, farm marketings, percent of acreage planted by type, and certified seed acres are also included for selected States. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. These estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments, Federal-State inspections, and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production, including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State have been classified by season according to the period (quarter) when the largest supplies are harvested. The four seasons are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July to Mid-September Fall August through November A crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because of overlapping harvests. Generally, the marketing season closely follows harvest except for fall potatoes, when marketing from storage may extend through August of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is from the start of harvest through August of the following year. 2008 Potato Production Down 7 Percent Potato production in 2008 is revised to 415 million cwt, up 1 percent from the estimate in the January Crop Production 2008 Summary but 7 percent below the 2007 crop. Harvested area, at 1.05 million acres, decreased 7 percent from 2007. The average yield is unchanged from the 2007 record high yield of 396 cwt per acre. Starting in 2007, Florida's winter potato production was combined with the spring season potatoes. Therefore, winter potatoes refer only to California in 2007. Winter potato production in 2008 is 2.53 million cwt, up 12 percent from 2007. Harvested area, at 11,000 acres, is 5 percent above 2007. The average yield for winter potatoes is 230 cwt per acre, up 15 cwt from 2007. Spring potato final production for 2008 is 20.1 million cwt, 2 percent above the previous year. Harvested acres, at 68,800 acres, decreased 2 percent from 2007. The average yield for spring potatoes of 293 cwt per acre is up 11 cwt from 2007. Summer potato production is 13.8 million cwt for 2008, 14 percent lower than 2007. Harvested area, at 45,100 acres, is down 7 percent from 2007. The average yield of 306 cwt per acre is down 25 cwt from 2007. Fall potato production is finalized at 379 million cwt for 2008, 7 percent below the 2007 crop. Area harvested in 2008 is 922,000 acres, down 7 percent from the previous year. The average yield, at 411 cwt per acre, is a record high, 1 cwt above the previous record high set in 2007. The value of all potatoes sold in 2008, at $3.49 billion, increased 13 percent from the previous year. The average price, at $8.42 per cwt, is up $0.91 from 2007. The quantity of potatoes sold from the 2008 crop totaled 384 million cwt, down 7 percent from 2007. Sales account for 93 percent of 2008 production, up slightly from the previous year. Processors used 253 million cwt of raw potatoes from the 2008 crop, down 8 percent from 2007. Table stock sales totaled 109 million cwt, 1 percent below the previous year. Seed sales of 20.9 million cwt are down 6 percent from 2007. Sales for livestock feed, at 803,000 cwt, decreased 31 percent from a year earlier. Potatoes used for chips and shoestrings totaled 50.7 million cwt in 2008, down 7 percent from the previous year. Frozen french fries and other frozen products utilized 154 million cwt of raw potatoes, which decreased 7 percent from 2007. Potatoes used for dehydrating totaled 40.7 million cwt, 17 percent below 2007. Canning use, at 2.95 million cwt, is down 11 percent from the previous year. Starch, flour, and other products were made from 5.07 million cwt of potatoes, 26 percent more than 2007. Shrinkage and loss is estimated at 26.4 million cwt for 2008, 11 percent below 2007. Potatoes used for livestock feed on farms where grown and home use totaled 823,000 cwt, 26 percent below the previous season. Growers kept 3.32 million cwt for seed on their own farms, 11 percent higher than a year earlier.
