"NEW POTATO RELEASE" Shows June Stocks at 12 Percent of Production This is the first June Potato Stocks Report issued by National Agricultural Statistics Service. At the request of the Potato Industry, a June stocks report was added to the previous monthly stocks program of December through May. Historical comparison are not available. The 15 major fall potato States held 51.4 million cwt of potatoes on June 1, 1999. This storage level accounted for 12 percent of 1998 fall production, compared with 21 percent in storage on May. Disappearance totaled 374 million cwt from the start of harvest to June 1. Processor usage in the eight major States totaled 187 million cwt for the season, with 18.9 million cwt of potatoes used in May. This is the first June 1 stocks report on storage potatoes. Historical comparisons are not available. Disappearance from the start of harvest to June 1 totaled 374 million cwt. May disappearance totaled 36.3 million cwt. Cumulative shrink and loss are estimated at 32.2 million cwt. Processing of 1998 crop potatoes so far this season totaled 187 million cwt in the eight major States. May processing used 18.9 million cwt of raw potatoes, compared to 19.2 million cwt the month before. Eastern States storage was dominated by Maine's 1.9 million cwt of potatoes on June 1, 1999. Maine's stocks amounted to 11 percent of production. Central States accounted for 9.1 million cwt of potato stocks this June 1. North Dakota's stocks were 4.0 million cwt amounting to 14 percent of fall production. Minnesota's stocks, at 2.5 million cwt, were 12 percent of their production. Western States held 40.3 million cwt of potatoes in storage on June 1, 1999. Idaho's stocks totaled 25.5 million cwt, covering 18 percent of their production and accounting for 63 percent of the Western States' remaining stocks. Washington's stocks were 7.5 million cwt or 8 percent of their fall production. Oregon, at 4.2 million cwt, held 16 percent of their production and Colorado's stocks were 2.7 million cwt or 11 percent of production.
