United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Pou 3-1 (98) Poultry - Production and Value 1997 Summary April 1998 Pou 3-1 (4-98) Production and Value by States, 1996-97 Value of Production and Sales Down 1 Percent The combined value of production from broilers, eggs, and turkeys and the value of sales from chickens in 1997, was $21.6 billion, down 1 percent from the $21.9 billion in 1996, according to the Agricultural Statistics Board. Of the combined total, 65 percent was from broilers, 21 percent from eggs, 13 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from other chickens. Value of Broiler Production Up 2 Percent The value of broilers produced during 1997 was $14.2 billion, up 2 percent from the $13.9 billion in 1996. The total number of broilers produced in 1997 was 7.76 billion, up 2 percent from 1996. The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 1997 was 37.5 billion pounds, up 3 percent from 1996. The 1997 average price per pound on a live weight equivalent basis was 37.7 cents per pound, compared to 38.1 cents per pound in 1996. Value of Egg Production Down 5 Percent Value of egg production in 1997 was $4.53 billion, down 5 percent from the $4.76 billion in 1996. Egg production totaled 77.4 billion eggs, up 1 percent from the 76.3 billion eggs produced in 1996. In 1997, eggs averaged 70.2 cents per dozen, compared with 74.9 cents in 1996. Value of Turkey Production Down 8 Percent The value of turkeys produced during 1997 was $2.88 billion, down 8 percent from the $3.13 billion the previous year. Turkey production in 1997 totaled 7.22 billion pounds live weight, compared with 7.23 billion pounds in 1996. The average price received by producers during 1997 was 39.9 cents per pound, compared with 43.3 cents in 1996. Value of Sales of Chicken Up 18 Percent The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 1997 was $72.5 million, up 18 percent from the $61.5 million a year ago. Prices averaged 7.7 cents per pound, compared with 6.7 cents in 1996. The number of chickens sold in 1997 totaled 191 million, up 10 percent from the total sold during the previous year.
