United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Pou 3-1 (00) Poultry - Production and Value 1999 Summary April 2000 Production and Value by States, 1998-99 Value of Production and Sales Up Slightly The combined value of production from broilers, eggs, turkeys and the value of sales from chickens in 1999, was $22.4 billion, up slightly from the $22.3 billion in 1998. Of the combined total, 68 percent was from broilers, 19 percent from eggs, 13 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from other chickens. Value of Broiler Production Down Slightly The value of broilers produced during 1999 was $15.1 billion, down slighlty from 1998. The total number of broilers produced in 1999 was 8.15 billion, up 3 percent from 1998. The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 1999 was 40.8 billion pounds, up 6 percent from 1998. The 1999 average price per pound on a live weight equivalent basis was 37.1 cents per pound, compared to 39.3 cents per pound in 1998. Value of Egg Production Down 3 Percent Value of egg production in 1999 was $4.32 billion, down 3 percent from the $4.44 billion in 1998. Egg production totaled 82.7 billion eggs, up 4 percent from the 79.8 billion eggs produced in 1998. In 1999, eggs averaged 62.7 cents per dozen, compared with 66.8 cents in 1998. Value of Turkey Production Up 6 Percent The value of turkeys produced during 1999 was $2.84 billion, up 6 percent from the $2.68 billion the previous year. Turkey production in 1999 totaled 6.95 billion pounds live weight, compared with 7.05 billion pounds in 1998. The average price received by producers during 1999 was 40.8 cents per pound, compared with 38.0 cents in 1998. Value of Sales of Chicken Down 10 Percent The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 1999 was $67.7 million, down 10 percent from the $75.5 million a year ago. Prices averaged 7.0 cents per pound, compared with 8.1 cents in 1998. The number of chickens sold in 1999 totaled 205 million, up 6 percent from the total sold during the previous year.
