California Rough Rice Stocks Down 10 Percent From October 2002 Rough rice stocks in all positions on October 1, 2003, totaled 3.15 million hundredweight (cwt), down 10 percent from the total on October 1, 2002. The California rough rice stocks were also down 55 percent from the August 1, 2003 level. Long grain varieties accounted for 2 percent of the total rough rice, medium grain accounted for 85 percent, and short grain varieties accounted for 13 percent. Milled rice stocks in all positions totaled 915,000 cwt, 26 percent above the comparable figure a year ago. Milled rice stocks were comprised of 316,000 cwt of whole kernel rice and 599,000 cwt of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.
