California Rough Rice Stocks Up 52 Percent From October 2003 Rough rice stocks in all positions on October 1, 2004, totaled 4.80 million hundredweight (cwt), up 52 percent from the total on October 1, 2003. California rough rice stocks were down 49 percent from the August 1, 2004 level. Long grain varieties accounted for 4 percent of the total rough rice, medium grain accounted for 88 percent, and short grain varieties accounted for 8 percent. Milled rice stocks in all positions totaled 541,000 cwt, 41 percent below a year ago. Milled rice stocks were comprised of 361,000 cwt of whole kernel rice and 180,000 cwt of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.
