California Rough Rice Stocks Down 27 Percent from October 2005 Rough rice stocks in all positions on October 1, 2006, totaled 3.68 million hundredweight (cwt), down 27 percent from the total on October 1, 2005. California rough rice stocks are down 54 percent from the August 1, 2006 level. Medium grain varieties account for 79 percent of the total rough rice, while long grain and short grain varieties combined account for about 21 percent of the total rough rice stocks. Milled rice stocks in all positions totaled 768,000 cwt, 9 percent below a year ago. Milled rice stocks are comprised of 465,000 cwt of whole kernel rice and 303,000 cwt of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.
