Introduction: This bulletin presents final estimates, including revisions, made by the Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB) for livestock operations during the years 2003 through 2007. Reference Statistical Bulletin No. 1019 for corresponding information about cattle and beef cow inventory, Statistical Bulletin No. 1022 for corresponding information about milk cow inventory, Statistical Bulletin No 1020 for corresponding information about hog inventory, and Statistical Bulletin No. 1023 for corresponding information about sheep and goat inventory. Inventory values and value per head for cattle, hogs, and sheep will be published in the Meat Animals, PDI - Final Estimates 2003-2007, Statistical Bulletin No. 1026. Procedures: Revisions were made after thorough review of the original survey data and all additional data now available, including the 2007 Census of Agriculture. The 2003-2007 estimates shown herein are considered final and will not be revised again. Prior to 2007, an operation is any place having one or more head of a specie on hand at any time during the year and percent of inventory reflects the average distribution based on surveys conducted during the year. For 2007, an operation is any place having one or more head of a specie on hand on December 31, 2007 and percent of inventory reflects the average distribution based primarily on end-of-year surveys. NASS engaged in an unprecedented level of public outreach for the 2007 Census of Agriculture, seeking to increase the level of awareness and response among U.S. agricultural producers and, in particular, minority and small farm operators. NASS made special efforts to reach out to minority and limited- resource farmers and ranchers by partnering with a number of community-based organizations. To maximize coverage of American Indian and Alaska Native farm operators, special procedures were followed in the census. A concerted effort was made to get individual reports from every American Indian and Alaska Native farm operator in the country. If this was not possible within some reservations, a single reservation-level census report was obtained from knowledgeable reservation officials. These reports covered agricultural activity on the entire reservation. Additionally NASS obtained, from knowledgeable reservation officials, the count of American Indian and Alaska Native farm operators (on reservations) who were not counted through individual census report forms, but whose agricultural activity was included in the reservation-level report form. As a result of this activity, the number of livestock operations increased in some states. For example, the increase in sheep operations in New Mexico can be attributed to this action. Historic Estimates: Final Estimates for Cattle, Beef Cows, Milk Cows, Hogs and Sheep Operations for 1998-02 are available in Statistical Bulletin No. 1002. The Census is the leading source of statistics about the Nation's agricultural production and the only source of consistent, comparable data at the county, State, and national levels. The Census includes all places from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products, including government payments, were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year. Census publications also include demographic items such as sex of operator, residence on or off the farm, days worked off farm, years present on farm, age group categories, race, and number of persons living in each household.
