United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Agricultural Statistics Board Statistical Bulletin Number 912 Honey Final Estimates 1986-92 Honey: Final estimates for 1986-1992. Agricultural Statistics Board. National Agricultural Statistics Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Abstract This publication presents final honey estimates made by the Agricultural Statistics Board for the period 1986-1992. The previous official series multi-year publication for honey was Statistical Bulletin No. 673 issued September 1981 for the years 1976-1979. Official NASS estimates are available for 1980-1981 in the NASS annual release "Honey" with the publication code SeHy 1-3 (82). NASS estimates for honey were not made for the years 1982-1985. For the period 1986-1992 NASS honey estimates were for producers with five or more colonies, including number of honey producing colonies, yield per colony, honey production, stocks held by producers, average price received by producers at point of first sale, and value of production. Colonies which produced honey in more than one State were counted in each State and yields may be understated. Estimates contained in this publication provide a historical record and benchmark for current estimates. Introduction Honey production estimates were published on a current basis during 1986-1992 in annual reports. Primary data used in preparing the current honey estimates were obtained from producers using non-probability surveys. Large producers were sampled more heavily than small operations. Information was collected by mail, telephone and face-to-face personal interviews. Survey indications are subject to sampling error and non-sampling errors, such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording and processing the data. Errors are minimized through quality controls in the data collection process and through a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. Lists of honey producers are updated annually in each State prior to sampling. Revisions were made only after a thorough review of the original data, with consideration given to all additional data now available, including the 1992 Census of Agriculture. At the national level, revisions of estimates of honey production were one to four percent. For information call Tom Kruchten at (202) 690-4870. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.
