United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Agricultural Statistics Board Statistical Bulletin Number 907 Meat Animals Production, Disposition and Income Final Estimates 1988-92 Meat Animals Production, Disposition, and Income: Final estimates for 1988-92. Agricultural Statistics Board, National Agricultural Statistics Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Statistical Bulletin No. 907. Abstract This publication presents final estimates of farm production, disposition, and income from cattle, hogs, and sheep for the period 1988-92. It continues the official series published in Statistical Bulletin No. 805, published in April 1990. This series includes annual estimates of production, marketings, death losses, and income. Estimates contained in this publication provide a historical record and benchmark for current estimates. Introduction Meat animal production, disposition, and income estimates for 1988-92 were published on a current basis in annual reports. These original estimates were based on inventory, birth, and price estimates as published in NASS cattle, hog, sheep, and agricultural prices reports, as well as information on inshipments and marketings obtained from other sources. The NASS inventory reports are based on probability surveys of producers. All producers, regardless of size, had a chance to be in the survey. Large operations were sampled more heavily than small operations. Since all operations raising cattle, hogs, or sheep are not included in the sample, survey estimates are subject to sampling variability. At the National level, this variability, as measured by the relative standard error, is about 1 percent for cattle, 1.5 percent for sheep, and 2 percent for hogs. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. The effects of these errors cannot be measured directly, but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. This report provides a balance sheet for each species. The sum of inventory on hand at the beginning of the year plus births and inshipments equals the sum of marketings, farm slaughter, deaths, and inventory on hand at the end of the year. Final revised estimates of inventories and births were published in Statistical Bulletins No. 904 (hogs), No. 905 (cattle), and No. 906 (sheep). The production, disposition, and income estimates presented in this report reflect any revisions published in the Statistical Bulletins. Revisions are made only after a thorough review of the original data, with consideration given to all additional information now available, including the 1992 Census of Agriculture. At the National level, revisions to gross income ranged from 0.1 to 2.6 percent for cattle, 0.1 to 0.3 percent for hogs, and 7.2 to 10.6 percent for sheep. For information call (202) 720-6880.
