United States Department of Agriculture Citrus Fruits Final Estimates 1992-97 National Agricultural Statistics Service Statistical Bulletin Number 961 Citrus Fruits: Final Estimates by States, 1992-97, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Statistics Board, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Statistical Bulletin No. 961. Introduction: This bulletin presents final estimates, including revisions made by the Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB), for the production years 1992 through 1997. Bearing acreage, yield, utilized production, price, and value data were published during calendar years 1993-98 in periodic ASB reports. Data included in this publication provide a historic record and a benchmark for current estimates. Procedures: Revisions were made after a thorough review of the original survey data and all additional data now available, including the 1997 Census of Agriculture. Other data considered included marketing agreement records, recorded truck and rail movement, quantities inspected, quantities used by processors, and the latest citrus surveys. The current acreages were evaluated with historic totals to ensure comparability with past Census relationships. The 1992-97 estimates shown herein are considered final and will not be revised again. At the National level, utilized production estimates were revised only in the 1996-97 season. The revisions were less than one percent for oranges, grapefruit, and lemons and just over 2 percent for tangerines. Value of production was revised less than one percent for grapefruit in the 1995-96 season and less than one percent for oranges, grapefruit, and lemons in the 1996-97 season. Tangerine value of production was revised 3 percent in the 1996-97 season. Revisions were mainly attributable to revised fresh and processed estimates. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = Sum(State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) divided by Sum(State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = Sum(State Process Value * State Box Weight) divided by Sum(State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = Sum(State All Value * State Box Weight) divided by Sum(State All Boxes * State Box Weight) For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of state's values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the state's values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices.
