July Cattle Inventory Down 1 Percent This publication is a result of a joint effort by Statistics Canada and NASS to release the number of cattle and calves by class and calf crop for both countries within one publication. This information was requested by the U. S. cattle industry to provide producers additional information about potential beef supplies. U. S. inventory numbers were previously released on July 21, 2000. All cattle and calves in the U. S. and Canada combined totaled 120.7 million head on July 1, 2000, 1 percent below a year earlier. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 48.8 million head, were slightly below the 49.0 million head on July 1, 1999. All cattle and calves in the United States as of July 1, 2000, totaled 106.4 million head, 1 percent below the 107.0 million head on July 1, 1999 and 1 percent below the 107.7 million head two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 43.2 million head, were slightly below the 43.3 million head on July 1, 1999 and 1 percent below the 43.6 million head two years ago. All cattle and calves in Canada as of July 1, 2000, totaled 14.3 million head, 1 percent below the 14.4 million head on July 1, 1999 and 3 percent below the 14.7 million head two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 5.6 million head, were 2 percent below the 5.7 million head on July 1, 1999 and 3 percent below the 5.8 million head two years ago. Data on cattle by farm type are now available for Canada. The 14.3 million head of cattle and calves reported for Canada are separated between dairy and beef operations. The beef operations are then classified as cow-calf operations, backgrounding-stocker operations, or feeding operations. For more information, contact Statistics Canada at 613-951-8715.
