Processing Vegetable Production Down 2 Percent From Last Year Tomato Production Continues at a Record Pace Processing vegetable production for the 4 major crops on contract is forecast at 16.2 million tons, down 2 percent from 1994 but 22 percent greater than the 1993 total. Record tomato production was more than offset by declines in sweet corn and snap bean production. Forecast production of tomatoes at 11.6 million tons is 2 percent greater than last year, and if realized would be a record high. Sweet corn production, estimated at 3.38 million tons was 9 percent less than 1994. Snap bean production is predicted to be 12 percent less than in 1994, and green pea production was forecast as being up 1 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 1.35 million acres was down slightly from last year. Onion Production Down 3 Percent Storage onion production (excluding California) is forecast at 34.2 million cwt, down 3 percent from 1994 but 11 percent above 1993. Total annual production of onions is forecast at 60.5 million cwt, down 3 percent from last year but 6 percent above two years ago. Vg 1-1 (9-95) HDR2012000140060915951500VEGETABLES NARRATIVES Processing Production Down 2 Percent Snap Beans: Processors expect to harvest 678,540 tons of snap beans, down 12 percent from last year, but up 19 percent from the contracted production in 1993. The decrease in production was due to a 3 percent decrease in harvested acres and a .33 ton per acre decrease in contracted yields from 1994. Wisconsin's crop suffered from extreme heat early in the growing season, and excess rain caused problems late in the season. In the North, white mold problems were extensive. A larger than normal number of unharvested acres were expected. Excessive heat in Minnesota stressed the crop and reduced yield prospects. Yields in Michigan were variable with white mold causing some acres to be abandoned. In New York, early rains and irrigation with stable water supplies lead to above average yields, and their largest crop in the past 10 years. Hot, dry conditions caused some acreage to be bypassed in New Jersey. The wet spring caused no major problems for the crop in California. Overall crop condition was rated good. Sweet Corn: Expected sweet corn production is estimated at 3.38 million tons, down 9 percent from 1994 but 24 percent greater than contracted production in 1993. The decreased production was due to a 4 percent decrease in harvested acreage and a .38 ton per acre decrease in yield from 1994. A 12 percent increase in acreage and a .30 ton per acre increase in yield allowed Washington to produce a record crop, and the largest in the Nation. In Wisconsin, yields were variable, with the hot weather reducing the growing season by up to two weeks in some areas. Excessive heat reduced yield prospects in Minnesota and New York. Hot conditions have accelerated crop development in New Jersey, but the crop condition remained good. The crop in Delaware was planted early and escaped much of the stress caused by excessive heat. Harvest was near completion and yields were good. Tomatoes: Tomato production is forecast at a record high 11.6 million tons, up 2 percent from last year and 21 percent greater than contracted production in 1993. A 5 percent increase in harvested acreage offset a 1.13 tons per acre decrease in yield. The 1995 California processing tomato production is forecast at 10.9 million tons, an increase of 3 percent over 1994. Yields in northern California were below average while yields in the south and central areas have been average. Split sets and bacterial speck have not been problems this year. In Michigan, a warm, wet August caused some harvesting problems. HDR2012000140060915951500PROCESSING VEGETABLES: AREA & PRODUCTION (DOMES. HDR2012000140060915951500ALL ONIONS; STORAGE; CALIF. All Onions Down 3 Percent: Spring down 2, Storage off 3, California down 10 Percent Onions: Annual production of onions (including all seasons) is forecast at 60.5 million cwt, down 3 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 158,110 acres, down 1 percent while the yield per acre of 383 cwt is down 11 cwt. Storage onions: Production of summer storage onions (excluding California) is forecast at 34.2 million cwt, down 3 percent from last year but 11 percent above two years ago. Harvested area is estimated at 82,810 acres, a 3 percent gain from last year, but the average forecast yield of 413 cwt per acre is down 25 cwt. In eastern Oregon and Idaho, plantings were delayed about two weeks due to wet weather. The late plantings and below normal growing degree days have resulted in a smaller crop than last year. As of September 3, only 7 percent of Idaho's crop had been harvested, compared to a five-year average of 30 percent. In Washington, the harvest was delayed one to two weeks by cool weather early in the growing season. Onion size was reported smaller than normal. Cool weather also delayed plantings about one week in Utah, but onion size should be larger than last year. Wet conditions reduced planted acreage and harvested acreage in Minnesota, and yield prospects have been reduced by the extreme heat. Excessive heat hurt some fields in Wisconsin while yields were hurt in other fields by excessive rainfall. Insect pressure to the crop was aided by the hot, wet conditions. In Michigan, harvest was just getting started. Heavy rains in some areas and very hot and humid weather has not been good for yields. Quality is good but size is average. California production is forecast at 11.2 million cwt, down 10 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 28,000 acres, is also down 10 percent while yields, forecast at 400 cwt per acre, are unchanged from last year. Growing conditions were improved over the previous year. Growth appears normal with few pest problems. Harvest has gotten off to a good start. Spring onions: The season end report of spring onions places production at 10.1 million cwt, down 2 percent from last year but 23 percent above 1993. Acreage harvested was up 1 percent from last year but yields were down 7 cwt per acre. The 1995 spring onion crop was valued at $191 million, up 60 percent from last year. Good growing conditions in California and Georgia produced a crop with good quality and size.
