Processing Production Up 3 Percent from Last Year Processing Tomato Crop at Record Level Processing vegetable production under contract for the 4 major processing crops is forecast at 16.1 million tons, up 3 percent from last year, but down 2 per- cent from 1994. Production of processing tomatoes at 11.7 million tons was up 5 percent from last year, and if realized would be a new record. Snap bean production, at 761,750 tons was up 13 percent from last year. Sweet corn production, at 3.3 million tons was off 2 percent from last year, and green pea production, at 412,690 tons was down 16 percent from 1995. Acres for harvest for the 4 major processing vegetable crops at 1.2 million acres were 6 percent less than in 1995. Storage Onion Production Down 2 Percent Storage onion production (excluding California) is forecast at 34.3 million hundredweight, down 2 percent from last year and 3 percent less than in 1994. Total onion production (excluding Nevada) is estimated at 61 million hundredweight, 3 percent less than last year and from 2 years ago. Processing Production Up 3 Percent Snap Beans: Processors contracted to harvest 761,750 tons of snap beans, up 13 percent from last year but 1 percent less than in 1994. A 2 percent decrease in harvested acreage was more than offset by a .53 ton per acre increase in yield. Cool, wet conditions across the East delayed plantings. However, growing and harvesting condition were generally favorable which allowed a good crop. Although yields are generally good, some disease problems could result in yield reductions in Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. In the Midwest, wet and cool conditions also delayed plantings. Flooding caused some acres to be abandoned in Wisconsin and reduced yields in Minnesota. Processors are concerned about frost for late planted acres in Wisconsin. In Minnesota, crop progress on some acreage was 7 to 10 days behind normal. In California, there were no major problems due to the late spring rains. Extremely high temperatures over the past several weeks caused some beans to wither. Harvest was currently underway and very good yields were reported. Acreage in Oregon was down 3 percent from last year but a .57 ton per acre increase in yield gave a crop that was 6 percent larger than in 1995. Sweet Corn: Expected contracted sweet corn production is estimated at 3.26 million tons, down 2 percent from last year and off 13 percent from 1994. A 4 percent decrease in acreage offset a .19 ton per acre increase in yield. The crop in the East was variable according to location. In New Jersey, the quality and yield were excellent. In Maryland, Delaware, and New York cool and wet conditions slowed crop progress. Bird and worm damage affected some of the crop in Delaware. In New York, good growing and harvesting conditions allowed a crop of good quality with yields generally better than last year. In the Midwest, crop progress in some fields was 5 to 14 days behind normal. In Minnesota, as of August 25, harvest was 47 percent complete, 9 percentage points ahead of last year and 6 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. However, some of the remaining corn was vulnerable to frost. The crop looked to be in average to good condition. In Wisconsin, much of the crop was 10 to 14 days late because of the cool, wet spring and summer. Some acres were lost to spring flooding. Tomatoes: Contracted tomato production is forecast at a record high 11.7 million tons, 5 percent greater than last year and 2 percent greater than the record 1994 crop. A 1 percent decrease in acreage was more than offset by a 1.92 ton increase in yield. Below normal temperatures slowed crop maturity in Maryland and New York. Wet weather adversely affected the early harvested acres in New Jersey. In California, the cool, wet spring delayed plantings which delayed harvest about 1 week in the Sacramento Valley. Excessive heat in July and August induced maturity and reduced quality, but yield was still forecasted at a record high 35.48 tons per acre. Onions: Annual production of onions (excluding Nevada) is forecast at 61 million hundredweight (cwt.), down 3 percent from comparable production in 1994 and 1995. Acreage for harvest at 160,660 is down slightly from last year's comparable acreage. Yield at 380 cwt. per acre is 11 cwt. less than 1995's comparable yield. Storage onions: Production of summer storage onions (excluding California) is forecast at 34.3 million cwt., 2 percent less than 1995 and 3 percent less than in 1994. Harvested acreage, at 80,960 is 2 percent less than last year while yield at 424 cwt. per acre was 4 cwt. less per acre than in 1995. In Michigan, quality on the western side of the state was very good. Recent dry conditions have kept insect and disease problems to a minimum. In Minnesota, conditions have been favorable for onion growth. In Oregon, Willamette valley growers expected an average to below average yielding crop. In Umatilla and Morrow counties, the crop looks better. Malheur county growers reported a lighter crop than last year. In Washington, harvest of the early storage crop had started with good quality onions being dug. Onion size tended to be more mediums than jumbos. The crop should go into storage in excellent condition if current weather prevails. In Idaho, many growers commented that the size of the onions was smaller than average. Late planting and a cool, wet spring retarded early development. The progress of the crop in Utah is about a week ahead of last year. In some areas harvest has already begun. Farmers are expecting an average harvest. California production is forecast at 13.0 million cwt., 2 percent greater than last year and two years ago. Acres harvested at 30,500 was unchanged from last year. Yield, at 425 cwt. per acre was 10 cwt. per acre greater than in 1995. Spring onions: The season end report of spring onions places production at 9.5 million cwt., down 6 percent from last year and 8 percent less than in 1994. Acreage harvested, at 36,800 acres was up 3 percent from a year ago but yield at 259 cwt. per acre was down 25 cwt. per acre. In Georgia, the crop was mostly fair to good. Harvest began late, but progressed to completion at nearly the usual date. Early cold temperatures did not have as large an effect on total production as first thought, but did affect quality and a large percentage was culled.
