Vg 1-1 (9-98)a Vegetables National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Released September 10, 1998, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. For information on "Vegetables" call Biz Wallingsford at (202) 720-2157, office hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Processing Production Down 2 Percent from Last Year Processing vegetable production for the 4 major processing crops is forecast at 14.0 million tons, down 2 percent from last year and 12 percent less than 2 years ago. Production of processing tomatoes at 9.6 million tons, is off 3 percent from last year and the lowest since 1993. Snap bean production, at 755,010 tons is up 4 percent from last year. Sweet corn production, at 3.2 million tons is off 3 percent from last year, and green pea production, at 481,600 tons is up 1 percent from 1997. Acres for harvest for the 4 major processing vegetable crops, at 1.23 million acres, are 2 percent more than in 1997. Asparagus Production Up 3 Percent Production of the 1998 asparagus crop is estimated at 2.0 million cwt, 3 percent higher than both 1997 and 1996. Acres harvested, at 74,450, are 1 percent above both 1997 and 1996. Fresh production of 1.3 million cwt, is up 11 percent from 1997 and 20 percent greater than 1996. Processed production, at 35,010 tons, is down 10 percent from 1997 and 19 percent less than 1996. Storage Onion Production Down 7 Percent Storage onion production (excluding California) is forecast at 35.6 million hundredweight, down 7 percent from last year but 7 percent more than in 1996. Total onion production (excluding Nevada) is estimated at 61.4 million hundredweight, 6 percent less than last year but slightly below 2 years ago. Processing Production Down 2 Percent Snap Beans: Production of snap beans is estimated at 755,010 tons, up 4 percent from last year but 2 percent less than in 1996. A 1 percent increase in harvested acreage accompanied a 0.10 ton per acre increase in yield. Michigan and Wisconsin yields are above average this year despite dry conditions early in the season. In Tennessee, the planting and growing season got off to a rough start. Growers had to replant two or three times due to heavy rains early in the season. Later in the season, disease and insect pressure was higher than normal causing excessive damage to the crop. Sweet Corn: Expected sweet corn production is estimated at 3.2 million tons, down 3 percent from last year and 2 percent below 1996. A 1 percent decrease in acreage goes along with a 0.16 ton per acre decrease in yield. In Idaho, above average temperatures and early precipitation have lowered yield expectations. Minnesota crop development is ahead of normal, but there is some damage from earlier storms. In Wisconsin, corn maturity was somewhat uneven due to varying weather conditions. Favorable weather conditions in New York allowed growers to plant early and have been beneficial for growth. Tomatoes: Tomato production is forecast at 9.6 million tons, 3 percent below last year and 16 percent less than 1996. A 5 percent increase in acreage was offset by a 2.6 ton decrease in yield. Cool, wet spring conditions delayed tomato maturity in the western half of the Nation. California harvest is 2-3 weeks behind schedule due to cool weather. This cool weather is also causing problems with mold and delayed ripening. Michigan harvest is in full swing with about 25 percent of the crop harvested. Yields are lower this year due to dry conditions. In Ohio, some flood damage was caused by excess rains. Asparagus: Production of the 1998 asparagus crop is estimated at 2.04 million cwt, 3 percent higher than both 1997 and 1996. Asparagus for canning, at 28,217 tons, is down 1 percent from last year. Frozen asparagus production of 6,450 tons, is down 39 percent from 1997. Total value of the crop, at 178 million dollars, is 2 percent less than in 1997 but 14 percent more than in 1996. Asapargus yields in Michigan were up despite dry soil conditions. Harvest continued until mid-June with few problems. In Oregon, growers planted fewer acres this year because of cool, wet spring weather. The cool weather also slowed growth in June and, as a result, yields were lower than recent years. Extremely wet weather at the beginning of the year delayed asparagus harvest for about two weeks. New Jersery had a short harvest season and produced a good quality crop. Onions: Annual production of onions (excluding Nevada) is forecast at 61.4 million hundredweight, down 6 percent from comparable production in 1997 but slightly above 1996. Acreage for harvest, at 154,530, is down 2 percent from last year's comparable acreage. Yield per acre, at 398 cwt, is 16 cwt less than 1997's comparable yield. Storage Onions: Production of summer storage onions (excluding California) is forecast at 35.6 million cwt, 7 percent less than 1997 but 7 percent more than in 1996. Harvested acreage, at 78,780, is 5 percent less than last year, and yield, at 451 cwt per acre, is 10 cwt less than in 1997. The Wisconsin crop has received warm conditions and adequate amounts of moisture during August. However, dry weather in July decreased some grower yields. In Idaho, onion harvest is just beginning, with 7 percent complete by the end of August. Michigan yields are lower than a year ago due to near drought conditions since planting. New York onions growers have had a tough year. After receiving hail damage on May 31 of this year, some growers decided to plow under their fields. Most growers, however, have continued to raise their crop and are experiencing lower yields and small bulbs. Recent dry conditions are also a concern for this years crop. Washington's onion crop is in average condition as the early hot weather resulted in smaller sizes than normal. Higher shrinkage may be a result of hail damage in some fields. California production is forecast at 11.5 million cwt, 10 percent less than last year and 14 percent less than two years ago. Acres harvested, at 28,000, are 3 percent less than last year. Yield, at 410 cwt per acre, is 30 cwt less than in 1997. Spring Onions: The season end report of spring onions places production at 9.3 million cwt, up 2 percent from last year and slightly above 1996.
