Contracted Processing Production Up 16 Percent from Last Year The 2002 contracted processing vegetable production for the four major processing crops is forecast at 15.4 million tons, up 16 percent from last year's comparable States and 2 percent more than the same States two years ago. Production of processing tomatoes, at 11.2 million tons, rose 23 percent from comparable States in 2001 and increased 5 percent from the same States in 2000. Snap bean production, at 739,270 tons, is up 13 percent from last year's comparable States. Sweet corn production, at 3.06 million tons, is down 3 percent from last year, and green pea production, at 380,680 tons, is down 1 percent for comparable States from 2001. Contracted acres for harvest of the four major processing vegetable crops, at 1.14 million acres, are 2 percent more than comparable States in 2001 but 7 percent less than the same States in 2000. Asparagus Production Down 12 Percent Production of the 2002 asparagus crop is forecast at 1.79 million cwt, down 12 percent from comparable States in 2001 and 19 percent below the same States in 2000. Acres harvested, at 65,900, are down 6 percent from last year's comparable States and 13 percent below comparable States two years earlier. Fresh production of 1.19 million cwt, decreased 11 percent from comparable States in 2001 and is 19 percent below the same States in 2000. Processed production, at 30,050 tons, is down 12 percent from last year's comparable States and 20 percent below the same States two years ago. Storage Onions Due to changes in the National Vegetable Estimation Program for the year 2002, the September storage onion production forecasts have been discontinued beginning with the 2002 crop year. The first storage onion production forecasts will be published in the October 4, 2002 Vegetables publication. Estimates to be published in the January 2003 annual. DE and VA estimates discontinued in 2002. Snap Beans: Contracted production of snap beans is forecast at 739,270 tons, up 13 percent from last year's comparable States. Based on comparable States between 2001 and 2002, a 6 percent increase in contracted harvested acreage accompanied a yield increase of 0.28 tons per acre. The crop in Illinois is doing well and growers are expecting average yields this season. The cold and wet conditions early in the growing season have not seemed to affect the crop. Indiana has had a hot, dry season. Michigan harvest is progressing with variable yields expected. In addition, leaf hopper numbers were very high in some fields. Oregon's Willamette Valley had record high temperatures a few days in a row, however, this had little effect on the snap beans. In general, cool nights and adequate moisture have helped the crop. In Pennsylvania, hot and dry weather has caused lower yields. Wisconsin's season started out wet, but conditions became hot and dry during July. Lower yields are projected for non-irrigated fields. Sweet Corn: Contracted sweet corn production is forecast at 3.06 million tons, down 3 percent from last year. A 4 percent decrease in contracted harvested acreage is partially offset by a yield increase of 0.08 tons per acre when comparing the 2002 season to 2001. Expected yields in Illinois are running below average due to lack of moisture but crop quality looks good. Minnesota has been wetter than normal in most areas this season. Storms from the end of June through July brought heavy rains with high winds, causing lodging in some areas. Some growers are also noticing corn smut on the crop. New York planting was slowed by extremely wet spring weather, but as the season progressed, conditions became dry, which has limited yields. Oregon growers report a normal to excellent crop with good ear development and little or no disease or insect damage. Most sweet corn is grown in the Willamette Valley, where there is adequate moisture and good weather for crop development. In addition, the Willamette Valley was spared the severe forest fires recently affecting other areas of the State. In Central and Southern Pennsylvania, a severe drought throughout June and July, combined with deer and racoon damage, resulted in lower yields. The crop in Northern Pennsylvania looks good. The Washington season started slow due to the cool, wet spring and some early planted sweet corn suffered wind and frost damage. Periods of extreme heat during the growing season hindered pollination. Mid to late-season conditions improved and harvest began in late July. Wisconsin is having an average season since most sweet corn is irrigated, but those without irrigation noted a decrease in yield due to hot and dry conditions in July. Tomatoes: Contracted tomato production is forecast at 11.2 million tons, 23 percent above last year's comparable States. Based on comparable States between 2001 and 2002, a 13 percent increase in contracted acreage was accompanied by an increased yield of 3.21 tons per acre. California experienced above normal temperatures in July, which lowered yields in some areas, caused some sunburned fruit, and accelerated maturity in mid-season plantings. Early varieties have shown better than average color and cooler weather has slowed development of some later varieties. Indiana yields are lower due to hot and dry weather conditions. Michigan's tomato harvest is underway with high yields expected. Ohio growers delayed planting because of wetter than normal conditions through mid-June. Drier than normal conditions during July, combined with delayed planting, have contributed to the low yields. Fresh production of 1.19 million cwt, is down 11 percent from last year's comparable States and 19 percent below comparable States two years earlier. Processed production, at 30,050 tons, is down 12 percent from comparable States in 2001 and 20 percent below the 2000 comparable States. Asparagus for canning, at 26,150 tons, is down 12 percent from last year's comparable States. Frozen asparagus production of 3,900 tons, is down 13 percent from comparable States in 2001. Total value of the crop, at 164 million dollars, is down 27 percent from comparable States in 2001 and 24 percent less than the same States in 2000. Asparagus harvest in California's Stockton-Delta region was delayed two weeks because of cold weather conditions. However, improved weather conditions made for an excellent harvest with no major delays and good quality reported. Due to low prices, some growers plowed under their crop. Michigan's harvest was hindered by hard frost damage early in the season. Harvest continued until late-June with few problems. Harvest in Washington was delayed two weeks by cool and windy conditions. Growers are reducing acreage as profitability in domestic asparagus continues to decline. Spring Onions: The end-of-season spring onion production estimate, at 9.42 million cwt, is down 15 percent from last year. Acres harvested, at 33,300, are down 8 percent from a year ago, and yield, at 283 cwt per acre, is down 23 cwt per acre. The value of the spring crop is estimated at 190 million dollars, 6 percent less than last year. The Arizona growing season was long and dry but overall quality and yield were was good due to the use of irrigation. Harvest in the Imperial Valley of California was initially slowed by cooler than normal temperatures, nevertheless, quality is good to excellent with average yields reported. In Georgia, temperature extremes and a fast spreading fungal disease reduced onion production. Seed stems and other defects became evident following a cold snap in February and a week of unusually warm weather in early April. Heavy rains in mid-April helped to spread stemphyllium fungus. Late planted onions escaped some of the damage. The Texas spring onion season started and progressed on schedule. Dry conditions along the Rio Grande Valley and in South Texas adversely affected yields, but good quality was reported. The next "Vegetables" report will be released at 3 p.m. ET on October 4, 2002.
