HDR1012000170100926951200WEEKLY WEATHER & CROP BULLETIN HDR2012000170100926951200NAT. AGRI. SUMMARY NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY September 18 - 24, 1995 HIGHLIGHTS: Unusually cold weather at midweek brought a killing frost to many areas in the western and central Corn belt ending their growing season 1 to 2 weeks early. Damage to late planted and immature row crops was likely. The cold weather also brought 1 to 9 inches of snow across most of Wyoming, and much of Colorado, western Nebraska, and western Kansas, which caused planting and harvesting delays. Heavy rains fell from western Texas to central New England, bringing some relief from the dry conditions there, but delaying planting and harvesting activities. The winter wheat crop in the 19 major producing States was 25 percent (%) planted, 12 percentage points behind the 5-year average. Dry conditions in the Northwest allowed good progress. Progress in Washington and Idaho was ahead of last year and the average while progress in Oregon and Montana was ahead of last year but behind the average. Over 20% of the crop in the upper Great Plains was planted before rain and snow stopped the planting. Progress in Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota increased by at least 20 points each, but all three States were still behind last year and the average. Wheat seeding in Kansas will resume when soil conditions are dry. Showers hindered planting from the Southeast to Texas, although Texas' planting advanced 10 points. Spring wheat harvest was 93% complete, 1 point ahead of normal, but 4 points behind last year. Harvest advanced 5 points each in Montana and North Dakota. Rain and snow showers temporarily delayed harvest in North Dakota. Corn condition in the 17 major producing States at 53% good to excellent declined 2 points from last week. Percentage of the crop mature, rated at 67% of the acreage, was 8 points ahead of the average. Crop maturity was behind the average in the upper and central Great Plains. Freezing temperatures in Illinois were expected to cause little damage to the crop. Producers in Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska were waiting to assess the damage from the freeze. The Ohio crop was maturing rapidly. Corn was 10% harvested, 2 points behind last year and the average. Harvest was ahead of the average in the Southeast and Great Lake States, but behind the average in the central and northern Great Plains. Harvest was gaining momentum in Indiana. Cotton condition was 37 percent good to excellent in the 14 major producing States, down 5 points from last week. Cotton bolls opening was 69% complete, up 7 points from last week and 3 points ahead of the average for the Nation. Cotton acreage harvested was estimated at 16%, up 1 point from last year and 2 points ahead of the average. Harvest progress was ahead of the average in the Delta and Texas, and near average in the Southeast. In Texas, the remaining cotton in the south-central areas and coastal bend were defoliated and harvested, even though the crop was not fully mature. Cold weather hampered crop maturity in the Texas plains, while, rains hampered harvest progress in South Carolina. Harvest was increasing in Arizona, Arkansas, and California, but insect pressure remained a problem in Arizona. Sorghum condition declined due to the cold weather with 46% of the crop rated good to excellent, compared with 52% last week. About 87% of the sorghum acres showed coloring, 1 point behind normal. Sorghum acreage mature, at 41%, is 14 points behind the average, and harvest at 28%, was equal to the average. Late-planted sorghum in South Dakota and Nebraska was probably severely damaged by the frost. Missouri and Kansas producers were concerned about freeze damage to their crops. In Texas, cold weather was slowing crop maturity on the plains. Rice harvest reached 62% complete, 9 points ahead of the 5-year average, but 2 points behind average. The harvest made good progress in the Delta. Soybean condition rated 47% good to excellent, 2 points less than last week. Soybeans dropping leaves, at 54% was 1 point less than average. Leaf dropping was the most behind in Nebraska, Missouri, and Illinois. Soybean acreage harvested, at 5%, is 10 points less than last year and 3 points less than the average. Producers in the Midwest were concerned about freeze damage to late- planted soybeans. The freeze most likely caused yield and quality damage to the Illinois crop. HDR2012000170100926951200NAT. WEATHER SUMMARY National Weather Summary Volume 82, No. 39 September 17 - 23, 1995 For additional information, call (202) 720-7917. Highlights: A severe early freeze struck the western Corn Belt and central High Plains, damaging immature corn, soybeans, and sorghum, particularly in areas affected by spring flooding and subsequent planting and crop-development delays. More than 120 daily-record lows were established from September 20-22 as very cold air plunged southward through the Plains, then settled eastward across the Midwest. More than 30 of the daily records had stood since 1983, when a similarly timed freeze had little effect on crops already accelerated to maturity by extreme heat and dryness. Another 20 had stood since September 22- 23, 1974, when cold air took a more easterly trajectory across the northern Corn Belt, damaging immature crops. Early in the week, hot weather prevailed across the West and South, resulting in more than a dozen daily-record highs. On Sunday, records were set in locations such as College Station, TX (103 degrees F) and Casper, WY (87 degrees F). Meanwhile in New England, where early-week rainfall approached 3 inches in Boston, MA and Providence, RI, conditions quickly changed from wet to cool. By Tuesday morning, Caribou, ME (29 degrees F) noted a daily-record low. Showers and thunderstorms erupted throughout the Plains and upper Midwest on September 18-19. Rainfall locally reached 3 to 5 inches from eastern Nebraska and northern Iowa southward into Texas. Snow, which was first observed in the northern Plains on Tuesday morning, fell heavily in the central Rockies and central High Plains at midweek. Up to 10 inches of snow whitened Wyoming's southern Bighorn Mountains, while more than a foot blanketed parts of the Colorado Rockies. Storm-total (September 20-21) snowfall reached 7.4 inches in Denver, CO and 7.1 inches in Casper, WY. Casper's total of 6.9 inches on Wednesday--only 3 days after a high of 87 degrees F--was their single-day September record. Similarly, Goodland, KS received a 24-hour, September- record, 5.8-inch snowfall. Measurable snow fell on the earliest date on record in Grand Island, NE (3.0 inches on Wednesday) and Dodge City, KS (1.4 inches on Thursday). Records continued to tumble in Dodge City on Friday morning, as the low of 29 degrees F tied their September record, and the barometric pressure of 30.54 inches was their third-highest September reading on record. Among the flurry of two dozen daily-record lows on Thursday, readings included 15 degrees F in Glasgow, MT and 18 degrees F in Williston, ND. The high failed to reach the freezing mark in Cheyenne, WY (30 degrees F), and struggled to 50 degrees F in Chicago, IL, the earliest autumn date it has failed to top that mark. On Friday in Chicago, on the heels of their hottest summer since 1955, the mercury dipped to 32 degrees F just before midnight, marking their earliest freeze on record, 35 days before the average date. Elsewhere on September 22, the earliest freeze on record occurred in Concordia, KS (a September-record- tying 29 degrees F), Kansas City, MO (a September record 31 degrees F), Des Moines, IA (31 degrees F), Topeka, KS (31 degrees F), and Wichita, KS (32 degrees F). A September record was broken in Hastings, NE (26 degrees F). Kansas City's growing season (last spring freeze to the first fall freeze) ended at 161 days, their shortest on record, while in Nebraska, Norfolk's season was halted at 143 days, 12 days fewer than normal. On Saturday, widespread frost occurred as far east as the upper Ohio Valley, where Parkersburg, WV notched a September-record 32 degrees F. Springfield, IL (32 degrees F) logged their earliest freeze on record, and Ft. Wayne, IN (29 degrees F) recorded their earliest sub-30 degree reading. Farther south and east, significant subtropical moisture overran the leading edge of the cold air, generating heavy rain from southern Texas to the East Coast. The rain dampened parched topsoils in the lower Mississippi Delta, Arklatex, and Middle Atlantic regions, and further eased long-term drought in the Northeast. Late- week rainfall locally topped 5 inches from south-central and eastern Texas to northern Alabama. Showers became more numerous across the southern Atlantic States at week's end.
