HDR1012000170101003951200WEEKLY WEATHER & CROP BULLETIN HDR2012000170101003951200NAT. AGRI. SUMMARY NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY September 25 - October 1, 1995 HIGHLIGHTS: A return to summer-like weather across the Central States allowed harvest activity to make good progress. Condition for all crops declined from last week, reflecting producers' assessment of crop damage from last week's freeze. The late spring planting left soybeans susceptible to an early freeze. Some soybean fields were 1 to 2 weeks from the stage of development needed to protect them from the freeze. Many soybean plants that sustained freeze damage were green and have shut-down. Damage to corn was limited due to the maturity of the crop. The accelerated development from the summer's heat wave left corn fields mature enough to endure the freeze. Heavy rains fell from the southern Great Plains to the Great Lakes region, bringing pre-planting moisture for winter wheat seeding, but slowing harvest activity. A late-week storm brought heavy rains to the Pacific Northwest, causing small grain planting delays. The winter wheat crop in the 19 major producing States was 41 percent (%) planted, 12 percentage points behind the 5-year average. Wet conditions in the Northwest slowed field activities. Planting progress in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska increased by at least 20 points, but all three States remained behind the average. Persistent dry soil conditions in Kansas left wheat seeding 22 points behind the average. Showers hindered planting in the middle and upper Mississippi Valley. Wet conditions slowed planting progress in Texas, where armyworms caused some problems in emerged fields. Winter wheat emerged for the major producing States was 16% complete, 10 points behind the average. Corn condition in the 17 major producing States at 52% good to excellent declined slightly from last week. Corn mature was rated at 89% of the acreage, 14 points ahead of the average. Crop maturity was ahead of the average in the Great Lakes region. The previous week's freezing temperatures caused limited damage to the corn crop. Producers in the western Corn Belt were harvesting corn at high moisture levels because of increased ear droppage. Corn moisture content in Minnesota average 27%, compared to 29% for the 5-year average. Corn harvested at 17% was 2 points behind last year and the average. Harvest activity was slowed by heavy weekend storms in the western Corn Belt. Cotton condition was 35 percent good to excellent in the 14 major producing States, down 2 points from last week. Cotton bolls opening was 76% complete, up 7 points from last week and 2 points ahead of the average for the Nation. Cotton acreage harvested was estimated at 23%, up 7 points from last week and 3 points ahead of the average. Harvest progress was ahead of the average in the Gulf Coast States. Cotton condition declined in Georgia due to damp weather and boll rot, and hard lock problems. Lower than expected yields were reported in Louisiana. Cotton in the Texas Plains suffered from too much rain and cool weather, while the cotton harvest resumed in central Texas after fields dried. Some cotton in central Arizona was lost to hail, high winds, and heavy rains. Cotton defoliation continued on early planted fields in the San Joaquin Valley, but progress remained a couple of weeks behind normal. The cotton harvest resumed in central Texas after fields dried. Sorghum condition declined with 38% of the crop rated good to excellent, compared with 46% last week. About 93% of the sorghum acres showed coloring, up 6 points from last week. Sorghum acreage mature, at 56%, is 11 points behind the average, and harvest, at 30%, was 5 points below the average. Late- planted sorghum was vulnerable to an early frost, and damage from last week's freeze was expected in the central Great Plains. Sorghum in the Texas High Plains made good progress despite cool, wet weather. Rice harvest reached 73% complete, 7 points ahead of the average, but 5 points behind last year. Harvest activity gained momentum in California and at 10% complete was 20 points behind the normal. The harvest made good progress in Texas and Arkansas. Soybean condition rated 44% good to excellent, 3 points less than last week. Soybeans dropping leaves, at 79%, was 6 points ahead of the average. Leaf dropping in Nebraska increased 65 points from last week due to the freeze. Soybean acreage harvested, at 15%, is 11 points less than last year and 3 points less than the average. Frost damage was reported in the Midwest in late-planted soybean fields. Many late planted and double crop soybean fields in the Ohio Valley were killed by last week's freeze. In South Dakota, many soybean fields were green at the time of the freeze. Soybeans harvested in Wisconsin had moisture levels as low as 11 percent. HDR2012000170101003951200NAT. WEATHER SUMMARY National Weather Summary Volume 82, No. 40 September 24 - 30, 1995 For additional information, call (202) 720-7917. Highlights: Cool weather prevailed across the East prior to midweek, accompanied by rain primarily along and near the coast. Farther west, southwesterly flow aloft in advance of a series of Pacific disturbances displaced last week's chill and pushed temperatures above 90 degrees F as far north as South Dakota. The infusion of energy helped to spark heavy rain in the Southwest and produced frequent showers in the Pacific Northwest. Late in the week, a low-pressure system formed in the central High Plains and tracked into the western Great Lakes States, resulting in heavy rains and harvest delays in areas hit by last week's freeze. At week's end, Tropical Storm Opal formed in the Gulf of Mexico near the northern Yucatan Peninsula, increasing this season's total of named Atlantic storms to 15, the fifth-greatest total in the past 120 years. On Sunday, the high of 59 degrees F in Macon, GA was their lowest September maximum on record. Elsewhere across Georgia, early-week rainfall totaled 3.55 inches in Augusta and 2.46 inches in Savannah. In eastern Florida, where locally heavy rain persisted through Thursday, weekly totals reached 5.55 inches in Daytona Beach and 3.29 inches in Miami. Farther north, Sunday lows of 35 degrees F in Paducah, KY and 32 degrees F in Youngstown, OH were among the final handful of records associated with last week's cold snap. Warmth returned to the Plains by midweek, with highs on Thursday reaching 99 degrees F in Wink, TX, 92 degrees F in Pierre, SD, and 91 degrees F in Valentine, NE. Also on September 28, heavy rain erupted in Arizona, where Tucson's daily total of 2.15 inches was 129 percent of their normal September total. A day later, showers spread northeastward throughout the Four Corners States and into the central and southern Plains, pushing weekly rainfall to 1.80 inches in Tulsa, OK and 1.22 inches in Wichita, KS. Elsewhere, rain fell on 4 to 7 days during the week from the Cascades westward, resulting in totals of 1 to 4 inches. Heavy rain developed on Friday from the central Plains to the western Great Lakes States. In Wyoming, Casper (0.50 inches) and Cheyenne (0.47 inches) notched daily-record rainfalls. Late-week totals in the northwestern Corn Belt included 3.80 inches in Alexandria, MN and 2.71 inches in Watertown, SD. Toward week's end, a pair of high-pressure systems--one over the Great Basin, the other over the Northeast--sandwiched the region of storminess. On Friday, lows in the Northeast included 27 degrees F in Concord, NH and 30 degrees F in Portland, ME. On the final day of September, Ely, NV noted 20 degrees F.
