HDR1012000170101017951200WEEKLY WEATHER & CROP BULLETIN HDR2012000170101017951200NAT. AGRI. SUMMARY NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY October 9 - 15, 1995 HIGHLIGHTS: Above-normal temperatures and dry conditions across the Nation for much of the week allowed row crops to dry down and producers to make good progress with the fall harvest. By the end of the week, a cold front brought cooler, more seasonal temperatures across the Nation. The cold front and the remains of Hurricane Opal brought rains to the eastern seaboard and gulf coast. The rains along the gulf coast caused some damage to the cotton crops and delayed the harvest of fall crops. Along the eastern seaboard, the rains also slowed harvests, but the moisture was welcomed for the fall planted crops. The winter wheat crop reached 75 percent(%) planted, 2 percentage points less than last year and the 5-year average. Although the warm, dry conditions allowed good planting progress to be made from Kansas to Ohio, it was at least 5 points behind the average in the southern Great Plains. Winter Wheat emerged, at 44%, was 4 points behind last year and 8 points behind the average. This week's rains across the gulf coast and the Southeast delayed plantings but provided needed moisture to previously planted wheat fields. Corn harvesting in the 17 major States reached 41%, 16 points greater than last week, and 4 points ahead of last year and the average. The warm, dry conditions allowed good progress to be made, especially in the central Corn Belt. In Indiana, harvest was 2 weeks ahead of average. Harvest progress was ahead of last year and average in all of the major States except South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Texas. Cotton bolls opening, at 83%, was 1 point behind the average and 6 points less than last year. Cotton harvested at 40%, was 2 points ahead of the average and 1 point ahead of last year. Bolls opening and harvest progress were well behind last year and the average in Oklahoma. Harvest progress lagged last year in Arizona, New Mexico, California, the Carolinas, Missouri, and Tennessee. In Texas, harvest was increasing in the plains. Sorghum maturity in the 12 major States reached 87%, 1 point behind the average. Maturity was behind the average in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, and the central Mississippi Valley. Sorghum harvest reached 48% complete, 4 points behind average. Progress in Texas and the central and lower Mississippi Valley was ahead of the average. Progress in the central and northern Great Plains was at least 10 points behind the average. In Texas, harvest continued at a good pace in the plains, and neared completion in the Blacklands. Rice harvest in the five major States reached 88%, just 1 point ahead of the average. Progress in the Delta was ahead of the average. In California, harvest was in full swing but progress was 23 points behind the average. Soybean harvesting in the 19 major producing States reached 54%, up 23 points from last week but 7 points behind last year and only 1 point behind the average. Producers in Nebraska and Iowa used the excellent harvesting conditions to harvest soybean fields instead of corn fields. Soybean harvest advanced 37 points in Iowa and 29 points in Nebraska. In Indiana, harvest was nearly 2 weeks ahead of the average. HDR2012000170101017951200NAT. WEATHER SUMMARY National Weather Summary Volume 82, No. 42 October 8 - 14, 1995 For additional information, call (202) 720-7917. Highlights: A strong, fast-moving cold front swept across the Nation after midweek, ending a 3-day spell of record warmth. Aside from early-week rains in the North-Central States, significant precipitation was confined to the Northwest and eastern seaboard. Rain tapered to showers after midweek west of the Cascades, while farther east, the front briefly interacted with tropical moisture, enhancing rainfall across the East. One to three-inch totals were common during October 13-14 from Florida to New England. Early in the week, thunderstorms peppered the Florida Peninsula, where Melbourne noted a daily-record rainfall (3.62 inches) on Sunday. Farther west, light precipitation spread across the upper Midwest from the northern Plains, hindering harvest activities in the already-damp northwestern Corn Belt. In Casper, WY, a daily-record precipitation total of 0.39 inches on October 8 included 1.7 inches of snow. On Tuesday, daily-record rains fell in Oregon at Astoria (2.03 inches) and Salem (1.35 inches). In addition, Astoria reported a peak gust to 43 mph. Farther east, daily-record warmth appeared at midweek from the Rockies to the Great Lakes. Among the 15 daily records on Wednesday were highs of 89 degrees F in both Miles City, MT and Rapid City, SD. A day later, another 15 records were broken in the Midwest, including highs of 86 degrees F in LaCrosse, WI and 83 degrees F in Ft. Wayne, IN. While the cold front brought much cooler air to the Central States on Friday, 17 additional high temperature records were set or tied across the eastern third of the country, with temperatures as much as 20 degrees F above normal in the Northeast. Saturday saw widespread rain up and down the Eastern Seaboard, as the intense cold front tracked to the coast.
