This would be a 6 percent increase from 1994, if realized. As of late December, Arizona seeding trailed normal progress, slowed by wet fields. Rain had also delayed plantings in California; additional acreage is going into the San Joaquin Valley. Rye: Seedings for 1995 are placed at 1.69 million acres, up 6 percent from 1994. Seeded area was equal to or greater than last year in all States except Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Winter Wheat: Seeded area for 1995 is estimated at 49.6 million acres, up 1 percent from 1994. Planting started last August in a few States; progress moved erratically in many areas, but reached about 97 percent complete by December 1. Hard Red Winter wheat totals 34.8 million acres, down 1 percent from last year's total, largely because of a 250,000 acre decline in Montana; the Central Plains Hard Red areas increases more than offset acreage declines. Once again late spring crop harvests cut Montana growers' seeding opportunity window as weather was unfavorable once the 1994 crops were out of the fields. Dryness hampered Colorado seedings; late rains may have prevented some Kansas seeding. Soft Red Winter wheat, at 10.6 million acres, is up 7 percent from a year ago. Favorable conditions allowed Arkansas, Illinois, and Missouri farmers to seed more normal acreage levels. White Winter seedings are 4.27 million acres, down 3 percent from last season. Hot, dry summer weather hindered plantings in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Many growers waited hoping for moisture; seeding into dry soils began in early October in Washington. Michigan's crop went into winter rated 80 percent good to excellent. This report was approved on January 12, 1995, by the Acting Secretary of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Statistics Service's Agricultural Statistics Board.
